New to lessons?
An inside look at the music teacher's mind
If you haven’t taken music lessons before, there are a few general guidelines you might find helpful, whether you take lessons from me or another teacher. Individual policies vary quite a bit, but these are fairly universal.
- When setting up initial lessons, it is important to leave a contact number where you can be reached, or at least a message can be left. Also, you’ll want to pronounce your name clearly and possibly spell it.
- It is important to distinguish between lessons and practice. If a prospective student will be unable to practice at all between lessons, then lessons should not be considered. Teachers don't like to hear lessons referred to as "practices".
- Music teachers are usually unavailable to pick up or drop children off, or to provide supervision outside of the scheduled lesson time.
- Music teachers don't expect to clean up after students or their siblings or caregivers.
- Food, drinks, and gum are generally not permitted in lessons. Fingernails are generally expected to be kept relatively short for piano lessons.
- Once a regular time is agreed on, weekly attendance is the “default”. Unless there is confusion over a changed time or possible holiday, teachers do not expect to confirm lessons.
- Music study entails expenses in addition to the lessons, such as sheet music, a metronome, flashcards, and cassette tapes. Students/parents are generally expected to take care of these as individual purchases or in the form of a materials fee.
